The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an alternative treatment for emotional distress and physical pain. Like acupuncture, it focuses on the meridian points to restore balance to your body’s energy. Restoring this energy balance can alleviate symptoms of negative emotion.

This technique has been studied and proven effective. It helps people with distress, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Emotional Freedom Technique Stages

  1. Identify the problem

For this technique to be effective, you must identify the core issue or fear, as this will be the focal point while you’re tapping. Focus on one problem at a time.

  1. Test the initial intensity

Set the intensity benchmark once you identify the problem, scaling from 0-10, with 10 being the worst or most difficult. Establishing a benchmark helps you monitor your progress after undergoing the technique.

  1. The setup

Before tapping, you should have an established phrase that explains what you are trying to address. The phrase will help you to focus on acknowledging the issue and accepting yourself despite the problem.

  1. EFT Tapping Sequence

Your therapist will help you through the EFT tapping sequence through the 9 major meridians. Through the tapping, you will recite your reminder phrase.

  1. Test the final intensity

Once the sequence has ended, rate your intensity level on a scale from 0 to 10. Compare your results with your first intensity level.
